How do you rate yourself as an actor on the scale of 1 to 10?
Six or seven. I’m improving. I was very bad in Jaane Tu.., I would rate that as a 5. It was a very likeable character. And the rawness worked. But I didn’t know what I was doing. At any given moment the things that were happening were impromptu. There was no thought put into it.

Are you a lot more comfortable in front of the camera now?
Decidedly. I know what I’m doing now. When I read a scene, when I walk on the set, I’m like okay fine, I have a plan. I’m not utterly lost. Earlier, I’d literally feel that I didn’t know what I was doing. I still rely heavily on my director and the cue my co-stars give me. Ultimately, I do what the director tells me. Now when I go on the set, I have a plan that I will do this, this and this. Of course, you then tweak it based on what’s happening on the sets.

I’m a nice boy. It’s that simple. I have a girlfriend. I haven’t cheated on her. So no rumours have surfaced.

In your relationship, you go by your heart or your head?
Largely by my heart. But you have to temper it with your head. I’m very cut-and-dry, very practical. And however hard it is, I will still say what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong.

To what lengths will you go to please the other person in a relationship?
Within the bounds of reason. If the person makes unreasonable demands of me then the person doesn’t love me. Because I wouldn’t make unreasonable demands of anyone.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done in love?
Nothing really. I’m sober in my relationships. I once told a girl I’ll wait for you at so and so place. If you don’t come, I’ll understand you don’t love me. (Laughs) She didn’t come.

Have you been tempted?
No. There’s more to it than just beautiful women. There has to be something that interests you. Apart from the fact that she is beautiful, does she interest me in that way? No, I’ve never felt that. Deepika (Padukone) is a stunningly beautiful girl but I’ve never felt that I could be in a relationship with her. There’s something that draws me to Avantika, which I haven’t found in anyone else. But who knows what will happen tomorrow?

When was the last time you lost your temper?
Recently. There were some renovations happening in my house. And the guys were throwing bricks into my garden. I have three cats and two dogs there. I went and yelled at them. Imagine if one brick had hit one of them, they would have been injured or worse. Luckily nothing happened.

When was the last time you cried?
Two months ago. A very dear friend of mine died in a car accident. He was driving from Madras to Tirupur. He had been in boarding school with me. When I was new in school, he was the guy who looked after me. He was like my older brother. One of those rare, good people.

In groups of people, I am the one who sits quietly. I’m never the life of the party. So I feel insignificant very often.
